The Marlins selected the contract of righty Severino Gonzalez on Sunday and optioned outfielder Braxton Lee to Triple-A New Orleans. The club also designated right-hander Brian Ellington for assignment.

Ellington moving past biceps tendinitis

Marlins reliever Brian Ellington threw eight pitches -- all balls -- during his Grapefruit League debut on Sunday against the Braves and was promptly relieved. The right-hander experienced soreness in his throwing shoulder and was diagnosed on Monday with right biceps tendinitis. No MRI was done.

Brian Michael Ellington....graduated from Oak Hall (FL) High School in 2008...missed senior season after undergoing Tommy John surgery by Dr. James Andrews in summer of 2007...in junior year, tossed three no-hitters and was named first team All-State and North Central Florida Baseball MVP...played one season at Florida State College in Jacksonville before transferring to Division II University of West Florida in Pensacola.

2017

Split season between Triple-A New Orleans and Miami, combining on a 2-1 record with five saves and a 5.53 ERA (68.1 ip/42 er)...Opened campaign on seven-day disabled list at NOLA with right back strain. Reinstated from DL on April 16 and shuttled between NOLA and Miami twice before staying with Marlins for good on July 21...Prior to first recall on May 7, had no record with two saves (three chances) and 3.38 ERA (8.0/3) in eight games with Baby Cakes...Overall with NOLA, went 1-0 with five saves (six chances) and 2.28 ERA (23.2/6) over 20 games. Struck out 36 while walking 11...With Miami, set career highs in games (42), innings pitched (44.2), and strikeouts (48). In first appearance of season with New Orleans, April 9 at Omaha, allowed three runs in 2.1 innings. Was one of just two appearances at Triple-A level allowing more than one run; other was May 14 at El Paso, when he allowed four runs in 0.2 ip... Combined to go 6-2 with 2.60 ERA (69.1 ip/20 er) in 49 games between Double-A Jacksonville, Triple-A New Orleans and Miami...Began season in Jacksonville bullpen, going 4-1 with 2.51 ERA (43.0/12) in 25 games...Missed most of July following stint with silver medal-winning Team USA at Pan-Am Games in Toronto. Appeared in four games with Team USA, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings...Tossed 2.0 or more innings in 11 of 25 games with Suns. Reached season-high of 3.2 innings in April 25 win over Birmingham...In that game, allowed just three hits while striking out season-best six with no runs and no walks allowed...Tallied 13 multi-strikeout games, and six times recorded three-or-more.
