MANAGERIAL/COACHING CAREER:

Mel Stottlemyre Jr. is entering his first season as Marlins' pitching coach. It will mark his sixth season as a Major League pitching coach, and his eighth as a Major League coach...Spent the last three seasons as Mariners' pitching coach, during which time Seattle registered the sixth-best team ERA (4.19) and average against (.253) in the American League...Also during his tenure, the Mariners posted the seventh-most strikeouts (3,890) and second-fewest walks (1,350) for a 2.88 strikeout/walk ratio that ranked fifth in the American League... In 2018, Seattle's strikeout/walk ratio was 3.32, third-best in the American League and the best single-season mark of Stottlemyre's tenure ...Spent 2002-15 in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, serving as bullpen coach (2014-15) following stints as its minor league pitching coordinator (2011-13), Major League pitching coach (2009-10), minor league pitching coordinator (2007-09), and minor league pitching coach with affiliates in Missoula (2005- 06), El Paso (2004), Lancaster (2003) and Yakima (2002)...Began his coaching career as the pitching coach with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (his alma mater) in 2001.

PLAYING CAREER:

Pitched in six minor league seasons in the Houston (1985- 1987) and Kansas City (1987-1990) organizations, combining to go 25-24 with a 3.50 ERA (416.2 ip/162 er) and 24 saves in 122 appearances (57 starts)..Pitched briefly in Majors with Kansas City, going 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA (31.1/17) in 13 games (two starts) in 1990...Was originally selected by Houston in first round of 1985 January Draft...Was also drafted by Seattle in 28th round of 1982 June Draft, but did not sign.

PERSONAL:

Melvin Leon Stottlemyre Jr....resides in Lewiston, ID, with his wife, Lisa…has three children: Maleigha, Colton and Blaise...graduated from Davis High School in Yakima, WA, in 1982...drafted by Seattle following his senior year of high school, but did not sign... attended the University of Nevada-Las Vegas...was the Astros first-round selection in the 1985 January Draft...owns Stotts Fishing Adventures on the Clearwater River near Lewiston, ID...his late father, Mel Sr., was a five-time AL All-Star (1965-66, '68-70) and went 164-139 with a 2.97 ERA over 11 Major League seasons with the Yankees, and served as pitching coach for the Yankees from 1996-2005 and the Mariners in 2008...brother, Todd, was 138-121 with a 4.28 ERA in 15 Major League seasons with the Blue Jays (1988-94), A's (1995), Cardinals (1996-98), Rangers (1998) and D-backs (1999-2002).
